Osteopathy

Neck Treatment

Neck pain is common in people of all ages. There can be a variety of reasons for this discomfort.

Working all day bent over a computer, driving long distances, poor posture while standing or sitting, stress and tiredness are all factors that can cause the muscles in the neck and upper back to become tight and the joints to become stiff, which can contribute to ongoing neck pain.

Sometimes a nerve in your neck can become irritated and cause pain in the arm going down into your shoulder or the hand, and may be accompanied by pins and needles and numbness. Some headaches can be the result of tension or stiffness in the neck and upper back.

Natural age-related wear and tear (osteoarthritis), does not necessarily lead to neck discomfort, however coupled with other factors, it can lead to muscular pain from the neck into the shoulder as well as some stiffness in moving the neck.

Headache

There are several reasons for headaches. Most are not serious and once the cause is established headaches can often be helped by simple changes in lifestyle. One cause can be tension or strain in the muscles and joints of the neck and upper back.

Many people who suffer quite severe headaches, accept their lot with little complaint & often do not consider the possibility, of treatment.

Shoulder Problems

Shoulder pain is common and can be caused by a number of symptoms, including: Rotator cuff problem. Joint pain. Frozen shoulder or adhesive capsulitis. Referred shoulder pain from the neck or upper back. Osteoarthritis trauma or shoulder surgery are most likely to develop osteoarthritis in later life. Symptoms include swelling, stiffness, aching and sharp, stabbing pains. Shoulder instability.

Back Pain

Hand & Elbow Pain

Pain occurring in the hand can sometimes be relieved by gentle manual treatment, depending on the cause. Osteoarthritis or wear and tear in the joints of the hand and the elbow may benefit from advice from an osteopath.

Elbow pain is often due to two main conditions commonly known as tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow. Tennis elbow causes pain and tenderness around the outside of the elbow joint, whereas golfer’s elbow causes pain around the inner side of the joint.

Tennis elbow is more common than golfer’s elbow, although both are injuries from repetitive overuse or wear and tear from any hobby, sport or activity, not just tennis or golf as the name implies. Sometimes a single injury such as a sudden unexpected tug on the forearm can cause the symptoms. Once the pain starts, normal activities and habits can maintain the problem. Pre-existing problems with the neck, wrist or shoulder, that might not be painful in themselves, can make it more likely to experience tennis or golfers elbow.

Hip Pain

There are a number of reasons for hip pain, such as a tight, strained or overused muscle in the hip or from the joint itself. Pain in the hip can sometimes be the result of an injury, it can be referred from the back or related to the way a person moves, stands and/or uses the hip.

Pain from osteoarthritis or wear and tear in the hip joint is also common. David using Osteopathy can help manage the stiffness by looking at the way the hip moves, strengthening and stretching the muscles, gently massaging the hip muscles and stretching the hip joint to reduce tension and improve the mobility of the joint, as well as working on the secondary problems like backache.

Knee Pain

Knee pain is very common, both from sport injuries & the wear & tear of day- to-day life. Damage, strain or sprain to the structures of the knee can give rise to symptoms. It can be the result of a sudden injury as often seen in sports injuries or in repeatedly placing strain on an area of the knee. Osteoarthritis or wear and tear is a common condition that affects the knee.

Common symptoms in the knee include pain, stiffness, aching, locking, swelling, limping and difficulty fully straightening or bending the knee.

Foot & Ankle Pain

Depending on the condition David considers the biomechanics of the whole body, including the lower limb & the foot. In order to provide comprehensive resolution. Pain can occur in the foot and ankles for a number of reasons.

Pregnancy

David has experience in working with expectant and new mothers. Appreciating that during pregnancy enormous physical, chemical & emotional changes take place over a relatively short period of time. Osteopathic patients range from children to older people to pregnant women.

Accupuncture

Medical Acupuncture or Dry Needling is available with Osteopathic treatment, (at no extra cost).

Dry needling is a neurophysiological evidence-based treatment technique that requires effective manual assessment of the neuromuscular system.

NB. Osteopath’s qualified like David, are well trained to utilise dry needling in conjunction with manual physical therapy interventions. Acupuncture stimulates the nerves in skin and muscle, and can produce a variety of effects. It is established that it increases the body's release of natural painkillers - endorphin and serotonin - in the pain pathways of both the spinal cord and the brain. This modifies the way pain signals are received.
NB Despite some evidence for a positive effect in the short term, further randomised clinical trials of high methodological quality, using standardised procedures for the application of acupuncture/dry needling are needed.

Treatment Payment

Initial 1 hour consultation is £50

Follow-up appointments are £50 for 40 minutes*

Cash or cheque payments are to be made at the time of your appointment.

The clinic accepts any credit or debit card that displays a Visa, V PAY, Mastercard, Maestro, American Express, Discover, Diners Club, or Union Pay logo as well as NFC payments via Google and Apple Pay.

All payments are taken at the end of each appointment at the clinic.

* Please note 24 hours notice is required when cancelling an appointment or unfortunately the patient will have to be charged.

Appointment Cancellation Policy

Please note appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours notice, normally require patients to meet the full fee.
If you make a booking within 24 hours of your appointment, you will still be liable for the cancellation fee.

Osteopathy & Health Insurance

If you would like your Osteopathic costs to be covered by your private health insurance, this must be clarified between yourself & your insurance company.

Osteopathy will then provide you with an invoice, via email, in order for you to submit to your insurance company and be reimbursed directly from them.

We will not be able to submit these invoices on your behalf. Please note any treatment, advice or services not reasonably covered by your policy will have to be met by yourself.

What is Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a way of detecting, treating and preventing health problems by moving, stretching and massaging a person's muscles and joints.

Osteopathy is based on the principle that the wellbeing of an individual depends on their bones, muscles, ligaments and connective tissue functioning smoothly together.

Osteopaths use physical manipulation, stretching and massage with the aim of:

increasing the mobility of joints
relieving muscle tension
enhancing the blood supply to tissues
helping the body to healarthritis

Osteopaths such as David Gray use a range of techniques, but not drugs or surgery.

In the UK, osteopathy is a health profession regulated by UK law.

When is Osteopathy used?

Most people who see an osteopath do so for help with conditions that affect the muscles, bones and joints, such as:

lower back pain
uncomplicated neck pain (as opposed to neck pain after an injury such as whiplash)
shoulder pain and elbow pain (for example, tennis elbow)
arthritis
problems with the pelvis, hips and legs
sports injuries
muscle and joint pain associated with driving, work or pregnancy

If you're pregnant, make sure you seek advice from your GP or midwife before you see an osteopath. David Gray is an osteopath who specialises in muscle or joint pain during pregnancy.

How is Osteopathy performed?

During your first osteopathy session, David will ask about your symptoms, general health and any other medical care you're receiving before carrying out a physical examination.

David will use his hands to find areas of weakness, tenderness, restriction or strain within your body, particularly the spine.

With your consent, you'll probably need to remove some clothing from the area being examined, and you may be asked to perform simple movements.

You will be be able to discuss with David whether osteopathy can help treat the problem and, if so, what the treatment programme should involve.

David is a qualified and registered Osteopath who is trained to identify when a patient needs to be referred to a GP or needs further tests, such as MRI scans or blood tests, to help diagnose the problem.

What are the Osteopathic techniques?

An a qualified Osteopath, Davis's aim is to restore the normal function and stability of the joints to help the body heal itself.

He uses his hands to treat your body in a variety of ways, using a mixture of gentle and forceful techniques.

Techniques are chosen based on the individual patient and the symptoms they have reported.

These include:

massage – to release and relax muscles
stretching stiff joints
articulation – where your joints are moved through their natural range of motion
arthritis
high-velocity thrusts – short, sharp movements to the spine, which normally produce a clicking noise similar to cracking your knuckles

These techniques aim to reduce pain, improve movement and encourage blood flow.

Osteopathy isn't usually painful, although it's not unusual to feel sore or stiff in the first few days after treatment, particularly if you're having treatment for a painful or inflamed injury.

David will explain whether you're likely to have any reactions. If you feel any pain during or after treatment, tell your David.

David will also provide advice on self-help and exercise to aid your recovery and prevent symptoms returning or getting worse.

In general, the first appointment with David will last about 45 minutes to an hour. Further treatments last around 30 minutes. Your course of treatment will depend on your symptoms.

You don't need to be referred by your GP to see an osteopath privately. Most private health insurance providers also provide cover for osteopathic treatment.
